BOOK CORNER #28 : Maria Pergay / Complete Works 1957 - 2010
Holding one’s own among goliaths of French design such Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Paulin and Roger Tallon is no easy task. Maria Pergay carved a reputation for her specialty: stainless steel, fashioned into all types of houseware items and furniture.
Her work is an heir of the industrial era that brought the materials of heavy industry into the home. “Either you charm it or it charms you,” said Maria Pergay of steel, as if describing a faithful but wily animal companion. Embracing a more artistic approach than her functionalist predecessors, the designer created contrasts by pairing steel with organic materials such as wood. This annotated catalog spans six decades of design by Maria Pergay.
