The Composers, exclusive interview
Catching up with The Pulse, the band’s drummer and singer.
As artists, what draws you to the work of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Sakoyo Yamaguchi?
The very free way they both combined images and signs. Not just in the realm of music, either. They drew from all aspects of culture, past and present— film, dance, theater, pop, everything. Even more than that, they both are inspirations in their original approaches to gender.
What in particular appeals to you about their approach to gender?
It’s not only an inversion, but is really free and personal mixing. Masculinity, femininity, glamour, elegance, play— these aspects could be for anyone, and your personal style is how it all lives together. We are interested in using as many colors as possible.
