BOOK CORNER #19: The Management of Insignificance
The catalogue of an exhibition that was held in Malaga, with a title that refers to video games and in particular to the Sims. The artists recreate situations with real people who are remotely directed, in impersonal locations.
A performance with actors is played and filmed; then it is screened in the exhibition space. But the artists also present paintings that take up the codes of engraving from the 1950s, insipid and childlike. The discordance between what is represented (actual characters but who are empty and articulated) and the classical technique is disconcerting, just as when painting takes up the framing of film or of photography.
Markus Muntean is Austrian and Adi Rosenblum is Israeli, and they form an artistic duo.
